Three Important Tips On Surviving Photo Sessions In The Rain

When it comes to your photo session, the weather is the last thing I want you to worry about!  It’s bad enough you already have to make sure everyone is wearing matching clothes, gets to the location on time and all of the other details swimming through your mind that will make your photos “perfect”!

Those tiny rain droplets have the ability to make you question everything about your plans, from your location to the white shirts your kids are wearing.  I mean, those are sure to get muddy before you even reach the car!

Oh no!  There is rain in the forecast!

On the day we planned to photograph my nephew’s birthday pictures, there was rain in the forecast and rescheduling was not an option! We worried about puddles and wet clothes, but in the end, there was no rain during the photo session at all!

The photos came out super cute and all of that worrying was for nothing!

So, what do you do when there is actual rain during your photo session?

A few days before the session, I will start checking the weather forecasts! I’ll look at multiple websites to gather as much information as possible. If I notice rain coming up in the next few days, I'll send you an email or give you a call to give you a heads up about the potential weather complications for the day of your session and we will decide whether or not to go with Plan B!

If we decide to stick it out, I do have a few tips that will hopefully help calm your nerves in regards to the weather.

Tip #1: Stay Positive

I truly believe there is no need to stress over the photos at all.  I'm going to make sure they turn out great whether it is raining or not, but I need you to relax so you can look your absolute best!

It is important to remember that a little bit of rain does not mean your session is ruined! Most likely, you don’t have your photos taken in the rain very often, so if you come to the session in a great mood and choose to embrace the experience, we are sure to capture memories that you are going to cherish for years to come!

Rather than dwelling on the less than ideal situation, let’s figure out a solution together.  We can’t change the weather, but we can change other our attitudes and details of the photo session, like outfits, locations, and props.

Tip #2: Embrace It

Remember when I said that my nephew’s pictures turned out super cute?  That is because we embraced the potential rain. He wore his rainboots and we used an umbrella to get some natural smiles.

If you think it might rain, add a change of clothes to your bags for everyone while you are packing and don’t forget to bring your raincoats!

Most kids love to jump in puddles and telling your children that if they smile big at the beginning of the session they get to jump in puddles at the end, is a wonderful bribery tactic!

Also, if we are unable to take photos in the exact location we planned on, there are some great indoor options we could choose from!  Some of those could include: your home, porches, college campuses, libraries, and even government buildings,

Tip #3: Don't panic

When scheduling the initial appointment, we will choose two dates that work for both of our schedules.  The second date will serve as a makeup date in case of rain. We do live in the PNW after all! The details for our backup plan will be in the contract that you sign after your design consultation so everything will be planned out ahead of time.

Trust Your Photographer

I know you probably don’t want to stand in the rain while I take photos of you, but I know of technical ways to make your pictures turn out just as good as if it were sunny out.  Plus, I love taking pictures which it is cloudy out because it helps to diffuse the light!

Rain adds a unique touch to portraits.  It’s an extra element that helps tell the story of your day.  You will be able to look back in your images and laugh about how things didn’t go exactly how you would have liked, but they still turned out okay, just like they always do.

Have you been putting off scheduling your photo session because you are worried it might rain?

Truth is, it might, but that is not a good reason to put off capturing your memories!  I would love to start planning a photo session with you. If you are ready, let’s talk!
