FAQ: What Should We Wear?

Before every photo session, I get asked a lot of questions, but the most common is definitely “What should we wear?”. The answer to that is very personal and is solely dependent upon you and your family’s style!

Luckily, I have a few tips and tricks to get you looking fabulous in your photographs!

#1.  Plan in Advance!

There is nothing worse than looking into your closet the night before a photo session and realizing you have nothing to wear!  I would recommend planning this at least one week in advance that way you have enough time to go shopping if you need to!

Pro Tip! When planning, lay each family member’s outfit next to each other, that way you can see how all of the pieces will look together.  If anything is missing, you will notice and won’t be stressing when you can’t find your pants while getting ready for your photo session!

#2.  Coordinate  Your Colors

When I worked at JCP Portraits, a lot of my guests would plan for “everybody to wear blue” and then Uncle Billy would always show up wearing red or or worse, “everybody wear white!” and the whole family would show up in every shade of white you could think of.

Instead of everybody wearing the same color, I would recommend choosing a color palette that you can reference when mix and matching your outfits.

If you have any questions about this, or need help choosing a color palette, I can definitely help with that!

#3. Consider Your Home Decor

Since you will most likely want to display these photos in your home, I suggest choosing colors that will blend well with the style that you have already chosen.

For example, if you have a lot of blue in your living room, you might want to choose blues rather than reds.

#4. Limit Prints and Large Logos

As a photographer, my job is to showcase you and your amazing family!  I want everyone who sees your pictures to comment on how happy you are together, how much you love each other, and how cute your little one is with a missing tooth.  I would rather your photographs be about you than the Elsa or Captain America characters that are plastered across your shirts!

When choosing your outfits, select something simple. You can always add accessories to make your outfit stand out a little bit more.

Pro Tip!  If your little one insists on wearing their favorite shirt that you don’t want to be in the picture, try to compromise by wearing a sweater on top!

#5. Select an Outfit That is Timeless

There is nothing wrong with using the seasons as inspiration.  Wearing red and green because it is almost Christmas is fine, but are you really going to want to hang that up in your home all year?

Keep in mind that you want your outfit selections to be timeless that way your photos are only dated by how much the children have grown, not by their clothes!

When it comes to choosing an outfit for your upcoming photo session, the number one thing to remember is comfort!  There is nothing that will ruin a photo session faster than an itchy sweater or painful heels!

Have fun playing stylist and let your family's personality shine, but don't let it stress you out.  In the grand scheme of things, the clothes don't matter all that much!
